William ApMadoc, musician and adjudicator.
Welsh-born, he arrived in the United States aboard the SS City of Montreal in October 1878 and spent the following half-century judging eisteddfodau and music competitions across the Midwest and beyond. The newspaper record runs from 1884 to 1955, and has a page of its own.
Born at Maesteg in Llangynwyd parish, Glamorganshire, on 19 March 1844, he came to the United States aboard the SS City of Montreal in October 1878 and settled in Chicago. He married Elizabeth Jones; four of their children are recorded — Oliver, Maurice Peris, Mary and William Tudor. A tenor and teacher of singing at the Chicago Conservatory, precentor of All Souls Church and music editor of The Cambrian, he spent nearly forty years adjudicating eisteddfodau across the Midwest, and died in Chicago on 12 August 1916; he is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery.
