Persons: Jerry Barnes, Homer Roberts, Ron Roberts Locations: Camp Mahn Go Tah See Mi Notes: Homer Robers, lower right hands a board up to Jerry Barnes while Ron Roberts (on the left) saws a board. The year was late August 1949 and the Roberts family and Jerry were the only people in camp. A polio epidemic had caused camp to be closed down with two weeks still to go.
The Roberts had rented their Redford, Michigan home out for the summer, so they had no place to stay except at the empty camp. Jerry's father, who had been a war correspondent in Europe during World War II had taken his wife to the scenes of his war-time activities, so Jerry had no place to go, and stayed with the Roberts for those last two weeks. It was about 14 feet tall and carried from their home in Redford to Cobo Hall on top of their station wagon. Filename: photo020

Band Camps - usually four one week session in the month of August - brought in different high school bands. Over the years bands from Southfield, Brighton, Redford Union, Northville, Allen Park, Port Huron, Waterford all made use of the camp.
A small number of selected summer staff members stayed on and supervised recreational activities for the bands - swimming, canoeing, sailing, rifelry, archery and did various janitorial tasks as well as minor maintenance jobs while bands were practicing. Being selected for band camp was much sought after. Filename: photo021
