Notes: Take at Lumbermans Monument long before trees had filled in the area.


It's a heavy bronze statue with 3 figures (from the left):
The "Riverman" with a tool called the peavy
The "Land looker" who scouted the forests for suitable places to establish a lumber camp, with his compass
The "Sawyer" with his double bitted axe and crosscut saw


The monument was erected in 1932 and created by artist Ailken


In the early days the Monument was protected by a chain-linked fence

Notes: Sunday morning chapel service. Sanford "Sandy" Burr at the pulpit was camp chaplain and nature assistant, as well as Chippewa section supervisor from 1947 to 1956


He was camp director for one year in 1957


Bill Homeier, counselor is at the organ. Jack Niggeman, next to the person at the far left, much later became the President of the camp board about 1972 and favored it becoming affiliated with the Pontiac YMCA

Notes: Here two cabins of campers, seven boys per cabin and their counslors (not in the picture) have carried their over-night supplies down from the cabin area and are cooking their evening supper.

Notes: Robbie Robinson, waterfront director directs the events at the water carnival races.


Picutre was taken in 1947.


The following year Howie Sumera became the waterfront director and Howie stayed on for many years. Howie was the elementary schools physical education directory for the Birmingham schools and was well respected by the adults of Birmingham and adored by the kids. He influenced alot of kids to come to camp over the years.


Note the tent that served as the storage center, later replaced by a wooden structure.

Notes: One of the 13 brand new cabins, built in 1946 and 1947 replacing the flimsey tent and rotten floorboards.
